In preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympics, Japan hired ethical hackers to launch a full-blown cyber attack on all government departments. The Japanese government hopes to uncover cyber vulnerabilities and remedy prior to hosting the 2020 Olympic Games.  In recent years, the UK conducted multiple cyber attacks prior to the 2012 Summer Games in London.

Although the return of the summer Olympic Games to Japan after 56 years sparks great excitement and hope for an economy boost, it also brings fear of potential security threats. Officials fret the Games will make Japan a target for cyber security breaches.

At an emergency response center in Tokyo, about 50 cyber defense specialists gathered to respond to the simulation and protect state ministries and agencies, as well as industry associations. This collaboration between business and government is the first of its kind in Japan.

In this day and age, information security should be a top priority for government and businesses alike. Many regulations, laws, and industry guidelines, such as Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB), and Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA), have been passed to protect security and privacy. It is up to entities to take compliance into their own hands to protect themselves. Follow Japan’s lead and secure yourself.
