As part of the operating procedure requirements for your SEMS program, the following are benefits and requirements for your operating procedures:

  • Operating procedures present a standardized way to conduct activities ranging from normal operations to emergency situations.
  • Standard operating procedures may apply to multiple facilities that are similarly  designed.
  • Procedures should have similar format and content, to minimize the likelihood of procedural error.
  • One of the primary functions of written operating procedures is to standardize equipment and facility operations training for new or inexperienced personnel.

Other necessary  information required to be included:

    1. The safety and environmental consequences of deviation outside the operating limit envelope
    2.  The steps required to correct or avoid a deviation from the operating limits
    3. Environmental and occupational safety and health considerations of chemical release or exposure
    4. Any special or unique hazards
  • Operating procedures must be reviewed and updated periodically. The frequency is directly correlated to the degree of risk present.
  • Changes to the facility should prompt a review of the procedures as part of the MOC process.
  • Personnel must be trained on any changes made to the procedures
